Chinese EV Maker BYD Overtakes Tesla in European Sales

BYD Company Limited has achieved a significant milestone in Europe’s electric vehicle market. The Chinese automaker sold 7,231 fully electric cars in April, narrowly surpassing Tesla’s 7,165 units. This marks the first time BYD has outsold its U.S. rival in the region since entering the market in 2022.

The figures represent a 359% year-over-year surge for BYD, while Tesla experienced a 49% decline during the same period. Analysts describe the development as a watershed moment for Europe’s automotive sector, signaling shifting competitive dynamics in the EV space.

BYD’s shares ROSE 3.5% following the announcement. The company aims to derive half its sales from international markets by 2030, a strategic pivot reflecting intensifying competition in its domestic Chinese market.
